Downtown Elkhart is trading its normal traffic pattern for checkered flags this weekend, as the 2026 THOR Industries Elkhart Grand Prix presented by Patrick takes over Main Street and the surrounding blocks for two days of karting, live music, and fireworks. The event runs Friday and Saturday, with street and parking lot closures already underway and building to full effect by Friday at noon through Sunday.
The city has been rolling out closures in stages since Wednesday, according to the Elkhart Police Department. High Street closed from the Civic Plaza parking lot to Waterfall Drive starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, while Nibco Parkway shut down from Elkhart Avenue to East Jackson Boulevard around the same time. Waterfall Drive itself is closing in two phases — first from Jackson Boulevard to Franklin Street on Wednesday morning, then from Franklin Street to East Street on Wednesday evening. Franklin Street, Jackson Boulevard, and Elkhart Avenue also have evening closures tied to race setup, and Main Street will close from High Street to Franklin Street starting at noon on Friday. City officials have advised residents to plan accordingly and use the event map to find routes around the race area.
A Street Circuit With Two River Crossings
The downtown course itself is a distinctive piece of engineering for a temporary street race: a 0.6-mile loop where kart drivers cross the Elkhart River twice on every single lap, according to kartXpress. That layout helped the event earn a spot in karting's so-called Triple Crown, a midwestern street-racing series that also includes the Quincy Grand Prix and the Rock Island Grand Prix in Illinois, as noted by TKART.
The race has deep roots in the city. During its original run in the early to mid-1990s, the Elkhart Grand Prix grew into one of the largest karting events in the country, drawing more than 600 entries and even landing national television broadcasts on ESPN2, per eKartingNews. Safety concerns and legal disputes eventually shut the series down, and it sat dormant for 22 years before then-Mayor Tim Neese led a push to bring it back in 2017, with the city partnering with USAC Karting to build and manage the downtown circuit.
Why RV Manufacturers Are Footing the Bill
The race's title sponsor, Thor Industries, isn't just any corporate name attached to a local festival. The world's largest RV manufacturer moved its global headquarters to downtown Elkhart along the St. Joseph River back in March 2013, according to a release carried by PR Newswire, with more than 70 percent of its operations already based in the surrounding region at the time of the move. Elkhart is widely known as the RV Capital of the World, with local manufacturing facilities producing more than 80 percent of all recreational vehicles built in the United States as of 2024, per Lippert. The KemKrest 5K Run/Walk kicks things off at 7 a.m. at the Grand Prix start/finish line, followed by a string of kart warm-ups beginning at 9:30 a.m. across classes including 206 Jr/Cadet, 206 Masters/Legends, Micro Swift/Mini Swift, 206 SR 1, KA Junior/Senior, and 206 SR 2. Heat Race 1 runs from 10:45 a.m. to 11:40 a.m., a Sponsors Race starts at noon alongside the Kids Zone opening, and Heat Race 2 runs from 2 p.m. to 2:56 p.m. Feature races follow from 5 p.m. to 7:20 p.m., after opening ceremonies at 4:40 p.m. bring God Bless America and the National Anthem to the start/finish line. The Renegade RV Car Show sets up along Main Street starting at 10 a.m., and the city notes the karting competitions are timed and operated in partnership with the Southern Indiana Racing Association, which manages timing systems and technical compliance for street karting events across Indiana.
Cornhole, Karaoke, and a Fireworks Finale
The festival isn't just for motorsports fans. The Patrick Industries Cornhole Tournament gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kardzhali Park, offering a $5,000 cash purse split across professional and amateur divisions, according to ABC57. Live music runs throughout the day at the City Center Park Stage, including a 2 p.m. set from The Chicago Trio, an evening Karting Awards Celebration at 7:45 p.m., and a performance from The Jesse Campbell Band at 8 p.m. The night caps off with the Mor/Ryde Fireworks Grand Finale at 10 p.m.
