Residents of Chicago's north-side neighborhoods are being put on high alert. According to the Chicago Police Department's community alert, a series of robberies and thefts have struck the Avondale, North Mayfair, North Park, Irving Park, and West Ridge areas within the 17th and 24th Districts. Victims at ATMs are being targeted by an individual posing as a security guard or repair technician, manipulating victims before withdrawing cash from their accounts, and in some instances, leading victims to believe he may be armed.
Multiple incidents have been reported over the past month, with the first occurring on the 3200 block of W. Addison on October 1, 2024, followed by several others, most recently on the 6100 block of N. Western on November 12. When pretending to aid the victim at an ATM, the thief either sends them away or physically relocates them from the scene, facilitating the theft of U.S. currency from the unsuspecting victims' accounts, with the offender then fleeing the area. Residents and passersby should be vigilant and exercise caution when using ATMs.
Authorities have described the suspect in case JH451596 as an African American male, aged between 20-40 years, standing approximately 5'8"-5'10", and weighing around 200-220 lbs. They are asking the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activity that may relate to these criminal incidents.
The Chicago Police Department is urging anyone confronted by the assailant to remain calm and try to memorize any distinguishing features such as scars, limps, or dental characteristics. Illustrating the importance of public assistance, the Chicago Police Department emphasizes, "Immediately report suspicious activity," and "Never pursue a fleeing assailant; provide the information to the police." In the event that individuals are approached by a witness to the thefts, they are being advised to collect contact information if possible, so that these details can be passed on to law enforcement.
