Tony Award winner Laura Benanti is bringing her one-woman comedy show, Nobody Cares, to Steppenwolf Theatre's Downstairs Theater at 1650 N. Halsted St. in Lincoln Park, with just five performances running from Wednesday through Sunday. The show, which mixes storytelling and original songs about motherhood, people-pleasing, and aging, marks the official launch of Benanti's national U.S. tour.
Benanti discussed the show in an interview with WGN-TV, which reports that Nobody Cares has already had two sold-out Off-Broadway engagements and an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe, and has earned a New York Times Critic's Pick distinction. Steppenwolf's engagement is billed as a love letter to, in the show's own framing, recovering people-pleasers, mothers, and anyone working on themselves, according to the WGN-TV report.
The Chicago stop is more than a tour date — it is the launching pad for a run that will carry the show to New Brunswick, New Jersey; Baltimore; Los Angeles; Costa Mesa, California; Boston; and Arlington, Virginia through May 2027, according to Broadway World. Ticket prices for the five Chicago performances range from $79 to $125, per the same outlet, which noted that tickets went on public sale in July ahead of the August opening.
From Audible Recording to Full Stage Show
Nobody Cares did not start out as a touring production. It originated as a live performance recorded at New York City's Minetta Lane Theatre in early 2024 through a partnership with Audible Originals, which released the recording as an audio show that June, according to Audible. The 65-minute show features five original songs co-written by composer and multi-instrumentalist Todd Almond, who also served as music director during the show's Off-Broadway premiere, with stage direction by Annie Tippe.
Before landing in Chicago, the show built momentum overseas. Nobody Cares played a sold-out engagement at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, followed by a two-week run at Underbelly Soho in London this past July, as reported by Newcity Stage. Edinburgh Fringe is widely considered the world's largest performing arts festival, underscoring how far the show has traveled before its North American premiere.
A Career Built on Broadway and Late-Night Satire
Benanti's path to solo comedy runs through decades of Broadway credits. She made her Broadway debut in 1998 at age 18 in the ensemble of The Sound of Music, later taking over the lead role of Maria von Trapp, and she went on to win the 2008 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Louise opposite Patti LuPone in the Broadway revival of Gypsy. She holds five career Tony nominations in total, including for Swing!, Into the Woods, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and She Loves Me, according to Broadway World.
Beyond the stage, Benanti built a national following for her recurring parody impression of former First Lady Melania Trump on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, beginning in 2016, per Newcity Stage. Nobody Cares represents a shift for the Tony winner into autobiographical stand-up and satirical song, a turn that outlet says was fueled in part by that Colbert caricature.
A Milestone Season for Steppenwolf
Landing the tour launch is itself a marker of Steppenwolf's standing in the theater world. Founded in 1976 by actors Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney, and Jeff Perry in a suburban church basement, Steppenwolf Theatre Company has since earned 14 Tony Awards and grown into an ensemble of more than 50 artists. The company is marking its 50th anniversary during the 2025–2026 season, according to Newcity Stage, making Benanti's engagement part of a milestone year for the Lincoln Park institution.
The performances take place in Steppenwolf's Downstairs Theater, a 515-seat proscenium auditorium that serves as the flagship venue of the theater's Lincoln Park campus.
