Cincinnati's dining landscape faces a notable shift with the announced closure of the Oakley Kitchen Food Hall. Following an announcement on its official website, the multifaceted dining space will cease operations of its lower-level food hall. In contrast, its upper-level event space remains open for private bookings. According to the venue's statement obtained by Local12, the existing restaurants at the food hall are slated to operate until November 30.
Despite its imminent closure, Oakley Kitchen leaves a legacy of fostering culinary talent within the region. Representing Oakley Kitchen, Daniel McCarthy expressed the venue's sense of achievement. "We're incredibly proud of what we've achieved with the Food Hall and the wonderful restaurants that have called it home over the years," McCarthy said in a statement on their website. The venue has served as a springboard for several successful food ventures, notably Onolicious Hawaii, which found its footing downtown, as covered by WLWT.
The food hall, a project led by Elias Leisring and Drew Simmons of Eli's BBQ, opened in 2021 after being hit by pandemic-related construction delays. It quickly became a culinary incubator, home to burgeoning businesses like Jimmy Lou's Kitchen, which would earn a national accolade. Jeff Harris's venture was recognized as a finalist for the prestigious James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America in 2023, as reported by Cincinnati.com.
Although the downstairs food hall is closing, the owners have planned several upgrades for the upstairs event space, purportedly to enhance guest experiences for the variety of gatherings it accommodates. The closure signifies an end-of-an era for the food hall, which, at its zenith, housed a cluster of varied culinary concepts. The venue's impact on the local food scene has been tangible, with McCarthy crediting Oakley Kitchen with enriching the community through its support of local chefs and restaurants. Any updates on the remaining vendors, Herban Vegans, and Yat Ka Mein can be sought from the businesses directly as they transition from their Oakley Kitchen locations.
