A 61-year-old construction worker was struck and killed by a TriMet MAX Blue Line train on a Portland street Tuesday afternoon. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Transit Police Division is currently investigating the incident. According to a statement released by the MCSO, the victim was Anthony Davis, a Salem resident involved in a construction project on East Burnside Street at Southeast 141st Avenue.
Emergency services, including Portland police officers and firefighters, responded quickly to the scene but were unable to save Davis. Initially alerted by a 911 call at about 2:15 p.m., they discovered that the eastbound train could not stop in time despite the operator's attempt to engage the emergency brakes and sound the horn, as explained in the MCSO statement.
The accident necessitated a temporary shutdown of East Burnside Street between Southeast 139th and 143rd Avenues for approximately three hours to allow for an on-site investigation. As the inquiry progresses, MCSO's Transit Police are piecing together the events that led to this fatal incident.
While details surrounding the circumstances of Davis' presence on the train tracks are still emerging, the Medical Examiner's Office has joined the ongoing investigation. The MCSO has noted that further information will be released as it becomes available.
