A wild police chase in Carlsbad ended dramatically when a vehicle flew off a cliffside on Carlsbad Boulevard yesterday after evading law enforcement officials. It was a scene right out of a movie that resulted in life-threatening injuries for the driver, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. It all started at about 4:01 p.m. when a vehicle crashed into a fence near the city's Fleet Maintenance Department and fled. Then it took a dangerous turn as officers engaged in pursuit before they called off the chase near Palomar Airport Road, citing safety concerns.
The aftermath, however, was just as chaotic. The vehicle, momentarily lost by the authorities, was next spotted hurtling itself over the edge of the bluffs along the coastline and landed on the beach below. The officers called for medical help and scrambled to perform emergency procedures until Carlsbad Fire Department personnel arrived and took over. The driver, with significant injuries, was quickly taken to a hospital. Despite the hazardous nature of the crash, they were fortunately expected to survive.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated, but early reports from the Carlsbad Police suggest drugs and alcohol were not involved. Police are asking anyone who saw the collision to come forward and share information by calling 442-339-2115.
