Noblesville's traditional Lighting of the Square tomorrow is expected to be a family-oriented event, and Hamilton County officials are ensuring it stays that way with a strict no-alcohol policy. This reminder comes hot on the heels of the town's recent Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) ordinance that permits carrying of alcoholic drinks outdoors from participating businesses, but not on county property.
Despite the DORA ordinance allowing sippable strolls in parts of Noblesville, County Commissioner Steve Dillinger emphasized that the rules are different for this event. "The Lighting of the Square is a time for families to come together and celebrate the season," he stated, according to a Hamilton County announcement. Dillinger called for an alcohol-free atmosphere to ensure the event remains "welcoming and safe for all ages."
Hamilton County law enforcement isn't taking the ban lightly. With the square decked in holiday lights and yuletide cheer, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will be on-site to monitor festivities, ensuring not a beer nor cocktail mars the family festivities. Under the county’s jurisdiction, consuming alcohol remains illegal on properties including the Judicial Center, Old Courthouse, and the county parking garage. To reinforce this, officials have placed a monetary discouragement; a fine of $100 for first-time offenders and an uptick to $500 for the second offense.
County property will be a strictly non-alcoholic zone during the Lighting of the Square event, as families gather to welcome the holiday season amidst sparkling lights and anticipated community cheer. "We want to make sure the event stays welcoming and safe for all ages," emphasized Dillinger, with the county's commitment to focus on holiday spirit, as reported in the Hamilton County's public statement. As the lights twinkle Saturday night, anyone caught with alcohol will be fined, turning pockets lighter by $100 or more.
