A police chase in Whiteland ended in tragedy when a motorcyclist, trying to escape law enforcement, crashed and was critically injured. The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. last night, when Johnson County deputies responded to a crash on Whiteland Road near I-65. The motorcyclist, 31-year-old Dustin Ammerman of Franklin, was thrown from his bike after colliding with a car that had pulled over for the police pursuit. He was thrown off the overpass and landed on the interstate below. Ammerman is currently in critical condition at IU Methodist Hospital, as detailed in the WKKG report.
According to the FOX59 report, the incident began when Whiteland police, with help from Johnson County deputies, tried to stop a motorcyclist. The rider refusing to stop, sped east on Whiteland Road, leading to a high-speed chase. The motorcyclist then collided with the rear passenger side of a vehicle that had pulled over to the shoulder to let law enforcement pass. The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is currently leading the investigation into the crash. In a statement obtained by WTHR, Sheriff Duane Burgess conveyed that the motorcyclist had begun "weave in and out of traffic fleeing from law enforcement" prior to the accident.
