A Labor Day argument at a Muncie public housing complex turned deadly, leaving 25-year-old Jaylen McCullum dead and a neighbor facing preliminary murder charges after fleeing to a town 65 miles away. James P. Clark Jr., 38, was arrested on the evening of Tuesday in Whitestown, Indiana, less than 24 hours after the shooting.
McCullum was rushed to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in critical condition after the shooting and later died there, according to the Delaware County Coroner's Office, as reported by WTHR. The shooting happened in the 4300 block of South Juniper Lane near East 26th Street and South Dayton Avenue on Muncie's south side, per WIBC. As The Star Press first reported, both Clark and McCullum lived at the same south-side complex where the shooting took place.
An Argument Preceded the Gunfire
A probable cause affidavit filed by investigators alleges that an argument preceded the fatal shooting late Monday night, with 911 dispatchers receiving the initial emergency call around 10:17 p.m. on September 7, according to the station's report. The complex, Earthstone Terrace, is a public housing townhouse development located at 3500 South Juniper Lane and managed by the Muncie Housing Authority, which oversees the property under federal low-income eligibility guidelines.
Police took Clark into custody on preliminary charges of murder, intimidation with a deadly weapon, and pointing a firearm, per the same account. At the time of his apprehension in Whitestown, located in Boone County roughly 65 miles from Muncie, Clark was also wanted on two active felony warrants out of neighboring Madison County, unlinked-varied-reference notes.
Autopsy and Sentencing Exposure Loom
The Delaware County Coroner's Office has ordered a forensic autopsy to determine McCullum's official cause and manner of death, a step investigators will rely on as physical evidence if the case moves toward prosecution.
