
A widespread recall has been issued for packages of Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style after the discovery of an undeclared wheat allergen. According to NBC Chicago, Sugar Foods decided to recall the 3.5-ounce pouches. A customer informed the company that the tortilla strips they had purchased were mixed with crispy onion strips, which contain wheat that is not listed on the tortilla strips' label.
The recall affects those pouches distributed from Sept. 30 to Nov. 11 across a swath of the country, impacting retailers in 22 states including Illinois, Indiana, California, and Florida. As noted by FOX9, "People who have a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product." To date, no illnesses associated with the recall have been reported.
The recalled product is marked with a "best by" date of June 20, 2025, and can be identified by UPC Code 7 87359 17504 6, both of which are displayed on the back of the pouch, as detailed by FOX9. The affected states also include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
