Some users have detailed problems accessing Exchange Online and the Microsoft Teams calendar, while others are specifically noting issues with sending emails and connecting to Outlook. DownDetector, which tracks tech outages, began documenting these outage reports around 4 a.m. Eastern Time; the number of reported problems notably increased to about 2,000 by 10 a.m., suggesting widespread disruption of services. In a social media post, Microsoft acknowledged the issue, stating they have started "to deploy a fix which is currently progressing through the affected environment," while also undertaking manual restarts for "a subset of machines that are in an unhealthy state," the specifics of this issue were also discussed by ABC 7 Chicago.
Moreover, institutions such as the University of Galway have reported an intermittent issue impacting their connectivity to Microsoft 365 services. "This is an intermittent issue impacting Microsoft 365 customers globally. Microsoft is aware & investigating," stated the Irish university's IT group, alluding to a broader disruption beyond individual users. Users shared their frustration on social media platforms, with one encountering "intermittent email outages," text from a social media user conveyed the frustration saying "Outlook 365 is really spotty this morning," as reported by CBS News.
Amidst this disruption, a word of caution has been issued by Downdetector, advising users to be aware of potential scammers attempting to capitalize on the outage by offering fake support services for Outlook, this advisory specifically from ABC 7 Chicago emphasizing the importance of vigilance during technical outages. Those who have paid for support should contact their financial institutions to ensure account security and report any fraudulent activity.
