The Granite School District has suffered a significant security breach, leading to the leakage of sensitive employee data. The breach was first reported by district officials on October 18th, and since then, multiple notifications have been communicated to employees and patrons, most recently on November 25th, to keep all parties informed. According to ABC4, the District stated, “Granite School District invests significant resources into protecting our student and employee information. Even with those investments, we recently experienced a cyber security incident that resulted in the compromise of personal identifiable information.”

Responses to this intrusive incident, directed at the district's payroll information, have prompted officials to encourage swift protective action. All district employees are being advised to place fraud alerts or freezes on their accounts to mitigate possible financial fallout, as reported by KUTV. "We know this has caused enormous stress and frustration for our employees and patrons," the district acknowledged. "We regret the actions of the threat actors and the extra burden this has placed on families leading up to the holiday season. We are working diligently to minimize the impact as much as possible."

The district is not tackling this alone. Their IT department team is engaged in a collaborative effort, working with the Utah State Board of Education, the Utah Cyber Security Center, and the FBI, trying to understand the scope of the attack. "As part of our ongoing investigation, we are just beginning to learn what types of personally identifiable information (PII) that was compromised as part of this incident," said the district, as per FOX13. While processes to stem the damage and analyze the extent of data compromise are in motion, it currently remains unclear whether any employee's bank account has directly been breached as part of this unfortunate cybersecurity incident.
