Two parents from Greenfield have been taken into custody following the discovery of their malnourished infant by local law enforcement. Nealy Knight, 22, and Brison Phipps, 18, face charges of neglect resulting in bodily injury, classified as a Level 5 felony, after their baby was found in a concerning state of health. According to FOX59, officers arrived at the residence on an unrelated mission on October 10, only to observe a baby displaying signs of severe malnourishment.
The Greenfield Police Department reported that paramedics were called immediately and swiftly determined that the infant required urgent medical attention. The baby was consequently transported to a hospital for treatment. WTHR notes that the Indiana Department of Child Services was contacted posthaste to collaborate with detectives and ensure the child’s wellbeing.
The arrests of Knight and Phipps occurred yesterday, following an investigation by the Department of Child Services. "These serious charges reflect the gravity of the situation and the need to protect vulnerable individuals," a spokesperson for the Greenfield Police Department expressed in a statement obtained by Greenfield Reporter. Further details revealed that the infant has since been released from the hospital and is now reportedly doing well with a foster family.
Both parents are expected to face the consequences of their actions, with initial court hearings having been scheduled for November 1 at 11 a.m. as per online court records. The baby's current condition is post-admittance to a fostering environment.
