The Six Avenue South Bridge has officially reopened in Palm Beach County, as announced by the Palm Beach County Engineering and Public Works (EPW), much to the relief of drivers in the Lake Worth Beach and Palm Springs area. According to WPTV, the bridge, which has been under construction since February 2022, reopened at 2 p.m. yesterday.
The $11 million project was necessitated by the need for the complete demolition and reconstruction of the bridge over Lake Osborne, and it encompassed a suite of improvements, including a new stormwater management system, sidewalks, curbs, guardrails, new mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, and a buffered bike lane. But during a preliminary walkthrough, contractors discovered a damaged stormwater pipe that required additional repairs, making the bridge unusable for some time after construction was initially deemed complete.
EPW officials have praised the perseverance and understanding of the local community during the months of construction. "EPW has worked diligently with the contractors and the Engineer of Record to address these concerns, ensuring the bridge's structural integrity and long-term reliability," county officials said in a statement obtained by WPTV.
The EPW highlighted a recent ground-penetrating radar test and analysis confirming the 6th Avenue South Bridge's safety for vehicles. Concerns arose after damage to a storm pipe, but the contractors made necessary corrections to maintain the bridge's integrity, as per the CBS12 report.
