A small sedan rolled onto its side and slammed into a palm tree along I-95 southbound near the High Meadows exit in Palm City on Friday evening, leaving the driver with traumatic injuries that required an emergency airlift to Fort Pierce. Martin County Fire Rescue said no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to the department.
MCFR's Special Operations team extracted the driver from the wrecked car before the LifeStar aeromedical crew flew the patient out, as reported by WPEC. All southbound lanes of I-95 have since reopened in the area. The High Meadows Avenue interchange, marked as Exit 102 along County Road 713, functions as a key link between I-95, State Road 714 and the surrounding Palm City neighborhoods, according to WQCS.

How LifeStar Gets Airborne So Fast
LifeStar flies an Airbus H130 helicopter out of Witham Field in Stuart, staffed by flight paramedics who also serve as active Martin County firefighters, working alongside contract pilots and mechanics supplied by Air Methods, according to Vertical Mag. The program traces back to September 2000, when it was created following a fatal crash that killed a 23-year-old local resident. The team now maintains a roster of one dedicated mechanic, four pilots and 16 board-certified flight paramedics, per Martin County Fire Rescue.
This is not the first time a serious highway crash has drawn a heavy emergency response in the same stretch of Martin County. In June, a Tesla car-hauler fire forced a shutdown of both the Turnpike and I-95 in nearby Hobe Sound fire closure, and in February 2024 a collision tied to a presidential motorcade near Palm City sent a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy to the hospital.

Rollover crashes make up just 2.1% of passenger vehicle accidents nationally, yet they account for nearly 35% of all passenger vehicle fatalities, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data analyzed by Spivey Law Firm. That disproportionate danger helps explain why dispatchers moved immediately to send both an extrication team and an aeromedical crew to Friday evening's scene rather than waiting to assess the severity first.
Martin County logged 3,021 total traffic accidents in 2023, resulting in 16 fatalities and 2,049 injuries, based on FLHSMV crash records compiled by Kibbey Wagner. The county's distracted-driving crash totals for 2024 and the year before are not specified here. Statewide, Florida logged 366,300 traffic accidents in 2025, producing 157,636 injury crashes and 2,930 deaths, according to Swope, Rodante P.A.
