A Lauderdale Lakes community is reeling from a tragic incident on Thanksgiving, when 72-year-old Hurelyon McLean was fatally shot after a dispute with a neighbor over loud music. According to 7News, Broward County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene on 2500 block Somerset Drive around 3:30 p.m. after being alerted to the shooting.
McLean's wife, Rose McLean, detailed the events leading up to her husband's untimely death to 7News. According to Rose, their neighbor had complained about the loud music coming from their unit immediately before the tragic event. Suffering from a gunshot wound, McLean was found by deputies and later pronounced deceased, with Rose recounting the horror of finding her husband lying "face down in the blood."
The dispute turned fatal and resulted in one individual being detained by the authorities, though it has not been confirmed whether the person in custody is the neighbor involved in the shooting. In a statement obtained by CBS News Miami, the suspect allegedly threatened Rose as well, "He was being very violent because I was saying, 'Why did you shoot my husband?' He said to me shut your mouth he'll shoot me too"
An attorney for the neighbor accused of the shooting told 7News that relevant information will be provided to the Broward State Attorney's Office, which will decide on any charges. McLean, a father and grandfather who worked as a bus driver, is being remembered at a prayer vigil led by Pastor Tracy McCloud, who expressed sadness over the situation, saying, "Who would have thought something tragic like this would happen?"
BSO detectives are investigating the incident, as the shooting of Hurelyon McLean has deeply affected his family on what should have been a joyful day. The circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation.
