A dirt road in Southwest Miami-Dade became the focus of a murder case after a man's body was found, leading to the arrest of Roiniel Perez on second-degree murder charges. The body of Oscar Hernandez Augustin, aged 52, was found last Thursday, according to CBS News Miami. Augustin had been reported missing by his wife, who expressed her concern when he failed to return calls or come home from work last Tuesday, prompting Miami-Dade Police to release a Missing Person Endangered flyer. The vehicle associated with Augustin, a white Toyota, was also noted in the alert.
The case quickly escalated when police, having located the victim's car, found Perez behind the wheel. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, Perez fled and eventually crashed, leading police on a chase that was captured in surveillance footage highlighted by NBC Miami. During his apprehension, officers unearthed Augustin's identification card and a bank card in Perez's wallet. These findings have led to Perez being held without bond, with the motive behind Augustin's death still under investigation. Augustin's widow, in a statement obtained by NBC Miami, said she did not recognize Perez and remembered her husband as a "kind man" who did not deserve such a tragic fate.
Further evidence was revealed following Perez's arrest. An autopsy report indicated that Augustin had been burned from the waist down and suffered multiple stab wounds. Subsequently, a substantial amount of blood was found in the back seats of the stolen car, along with blue latex gloves. Perez's cellphone contained incriminating evidence such as photos of the victim's blood-stained vehicle and the cards and ID belonging to Augustin. The report, according to details from NBC Miami, even noted images of Perez's palm exhibiting multiple cuts.
In the wake of these developments, Perez, aged 31, now faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder with a weapon. He has allegedly confessed to having used Augustin's bank card since the disappearance, a detail shared by the police report, along with the statement that Augustin had picked up Perez early that Tuesday before his disappearance.
