Miami law enforcement officials have taken into custody Kevin Paul Prater, a man facing multiple charges after a dramatic series of events that included a high-speed chase through the city. Prater, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department, engaged in dangerous maneuvers to avoid arrest, putting both civilians and law enforcement officers at risk.
The Miami-Dade Police, conducting surveillance on Prater’s vehicle, sprung into action after observing him enter the car on Wednesday afternoon. Their attempts to stop Prater using standard police procedures were foiled when he sped off, initiating the chase. According to a statement from the MDPD, the department's Aviation Unit played a pivotal role in tracking down the suspect, who had managed to elude officers on the ground.
Reportedly, the pursuit came to an end in the vicinity of SW 72nd Avenue and SW 41st Street, where Prater's desperation to escape law enforcement resulted in multiple collisions. These collisions, both with civilian and police vehicles, occurred as Prater made continued attempts to break through the encircling police, the MDPD detailed. Following the collisions, officers were able to detain him at last.
For his actions, Prater now faces aggravated assault with a deadly weapon among other serious charges, including fleeing and eluding law enforcement, as well as reckless driving. Born on March 8, 1983, the white male culprit sustained injuries during the incident necessitating medical attention. He was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, as confirmed by the MDPD's press release.
Mr. Prater remains in custody, and the case continues to develop as the police finalize their investigation.
