San Francisco's Mayor, London N. Breed, has announced the appointment of Mike Nakornkhet as the new San Francisco International Airport (SFO) director. This major transportation hub plays a pivotal role in the city's economy. Taking over from outgoing SFO Director Ivar Satero, who is set to retire in early 2025, Nakornkhet steps into his new role backed by a wealth of experience spanning more than two decades in the aviation sector. "SFO is one of the most dynamic and important airports in our country, and its success is critical to San Francisco’s economic recovery," Mayor Breed said, as per the City and County of San Francisco.
As SFO braces for a change in leadership, the expectations placed on Nakornkhet are high, largely due to the legacy left by Satero. During Satero's tenure, the airport launched the new Harvey Milk Terminal and added numerous international destinations. "I am incredibly honored to be appointed as Airport Director of SFO by Mayor Breed and am humbled by the trust and confidence that she has placed in me to lead this extraordinary airport," Nakornkhet told the City and County of San Francisco.
Nakornkhet's career in the aviation industry is robust, and he is currently serving as the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of the Denver International Airport (DEN), where he has been overseeing financial operations and a substantial Capital Improvement Plan. His previous experience includes 13 years at SFO, which will undoubtedly assist him in understanding the intricacies of his new role. Mayor Breed has high hopes for Nakornkhet, emphasizing his vision and experience will help ensure SFO's position as a leader in the aviation industry.
Support for Nakornkhet's appointment has been widespread, with SFO Director Ivar Satero and Airport Commission President Malcolm Yeung expressing their confidence. "I'm so pleased to offer Mike my congratulations on his selection as the next SFO Airport Director," Satero said, noting Nakornkhet's significant contributions to SFO and DEN. Yeung also emphasized the challenges ahead, saying, as per the City and County of San Francisco, "He has big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of previous Directors who have stewarded SFO to become an internationally recognized airport."
