Over the weekend, a carefully coordinated effort between local law enforcement and retail giants Target and Walmart led to multiple arrests across Washington County in a crackdown on organized retail theft. On November 23, teams from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, including detectives and patrol deputies, collaborated with asset protection staff at various store locations in a sweeping operation aimed at curtailing the rising issue of in-store theft.
The mission, which took place at a Target store on SW Beaverton Hillsdale Highway in Beaverton, another Target on NW Cornell Road in Portland, and a Walmart in Cornelius, saw several individuals apprehended for engaging in deceptive behaviors. According to a statement obtained by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the suspects were allegedly involved in fraudulent practices and were contacted by loss prevention personnel in a concerted effort throughout the day.
As a result of these efforts, officers made a series of arrests, taking into custody individuals ranging in age from 18 to 66. Included in the round-up are names like Cruz Siquina and Shawn Saunders of Portland, Daniel Cochran and Michael Caraffa of Beaverton, and Arlene Center from Beaverton, among others. The arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing battle against retail crime, which has plagued store owners and left a dent in the local economy.
The initiative was backed by a grant from the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission, funneled through the District Attorney's Office, to decisively address the organized retail theft phenomenon. Washington County Sheriff’s Office and its partners pledged to carry on these anti-theft operations, sending a clear message that such illicit activities will be met with swift action. The synergy between law enforcement and retail asset protection is a model of community involvement, signaling that everyone shares in the responsibility of upholding the rule of law within the marketplace.
