The New Palestine Dragons decisively claimed their fourth state championship title in Class 4A football, overcoming East Noble with a 56-26 victory. The championship game, a testament to New Palestine's prowess on the field, also marked the school's return to dominance, as they secured their first title since 2019, according to a report by WTHR.
In what initially appeared to be a game that might lean in favor of East Noble, the Knights struck first with a dramatic 80-yard touchdown. This early triumph, however, was swiftly countered by New Palestine's ferocious response, as they managed to quickly assemble 28 uninterrupted points. Josh Ranes was a key player, delivering three 1-yard scoring runs, while Austin McMahan caught a notable 52-yard touchdown pass, helping to secure a 28-7 lead, as IHSAA reported.
Despite the Dragons' growing lead, East Noble's Knights refused to surrender without a fight, narrowing the lead with a touchdown late in the second quarter. Nevertheless, New Palestine's offensive momentum proved unstoppable, continuing to pile on the points in the second half. Quarterback Jacob Davis contributed with a 1-yard run after a solid defensive performance, and Caden Jacobia's 61-yard dash underscored the Dragons' dominance at 42-19 by the end of the third quarter, as per WTHR.
Reflecting on the achievement, New Palestine head coach Kyle Ralph shared, "I'm proud of our kids. I'm proud of our coaches and our community," and added his sentiment on the repetitive act of winning, saying, "It never gets tiring. It is tiring to do this, but you never get tired of winning, especially at this level and at a high level like we have. It's hard to do. You have to be proud," according to a statement obtained by IHSAA. The Dragons' road to victory also included achieving a spotless 14-0 season record, mirroring their prior championship-winning seasons.
The Knights, despite their loss, had a commendable journey to the state finals, showcasing a strong season culminating in their appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium. Their quick start in the title game, as highlighted by Rylee Biddle's 80-yard pass to Logan Hatton, proved that they were equipped to challenge the Dragons initially, as noted by WANE. However, New Palestine's ability to rapidly turn the game around and maintain a commanding lead is what ultimately set them apart, solidifying their standing as state champions and illustrating the depth of their strength and strategy on the gridiron.
