Tragedy struck on the South Side of Chicago when an altercation during a routine traffic stop escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire, leaving a police officer and one civilian dead, as reported by the Chicago Police Department in a preliminary statement. The incident occurred on Monday evening, around 8:05 p.m., when officers from the 6th District attempted to pull over a vehicle with three occupants in the 8000 block of S. Ingleside.
According to the Chicago Police Department's press release, the situation rapidly deteriorated when one individual in the vehicle fired at the officers, hitting an officer and another occupant inside the car, the shooter in his haste to flee the scene, collided with another officer with the vehicle and then continued his escape on foot but was apprehended shortly after in the 8000 block of S. Maryland; a second suspect was detained at the scene, and two firearms were secured by law enforcement.
The wounded officer was rushed to a nearby hospital where he tragically succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The civilian who was shot during the encounter also died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. On a brighter note, the officer struck by the suspect’s vehicle did not sustain life-threatening injuries and is reported to be in fair condition in the hospital.
The aftermath of this confrontation has prompted an investigation led by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which is being carried out with the aid of the police department. The involved officers will be assigned to administrative duties for at least 30 days as procedure mandates and with the intricate web of events that unfolded.
