An officer-involved shooting broke out in downtown Indianapolis yesterday afternoon after officers responded to a welfare check at a local CVS Pharmacy. According to reports from WRTV, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrived at the scene at 1545 North Meridian Street following a call about an unresponsive man inside a vehicle parked at the business.
The situation escalated when the man, after interacting with officers, got back into his car while the driver side door was still open. "At that point, the suspect reversed the vehicle, pinning the officer in between the vehicle and the wall, striking the officer with the driver side door," IMPD Deputy Chief Michael Wolley was quoted in an article from WTHR.
The IMPD reported that at one point during the exchange, an officer pulled out their gun and shot the driver in the arm. As a result of this incident, both the driver and the officer were taken to local hospitals; the driver in stable condition and the officer, who did not suffer any broken bones or significant trauma, was later released in good condition as per the announcement by IMPD Chief Chris Bailey via WRTV.
The ordeal caused not only a physical confrontation but also significant traffic disruptions. "It was mass chaos," said Jennifer Bacher, who was at the drive thru across the street when she heard the shots fired and noticed the police with their guns drawn behind their vehicles. IndyStar reported the incident led to the shutdown of North Meridian Street from 14th to 16th streets, as well as 16th Street from Pennsylvania Street to North Meridian, advising drivers to seek alternative routes.
