The individuals, originally sheltered by Camillus House in Miami, were given a stark choice: take a sudden bus ride to their new location or face the streets once more.
As reported by Miami-Dade County, Senator García, a long-serving board member of Camillus House, expressed dismay and concern over the abrupt relocation. "Suddenly they were told to grab their belongings and were moved to a hostel in Miami Beach or be back on the streets," García stated, indicating the stark lack of preparation and empathy in the handling of the relocation.
Camillus House, renowned for its measured and considerate approaches to supporting Miami's homeless, had been developing a process to gradually move its clients. García, familiar with the organization's operations due to his tenure on the Camillus Board and on Camillus Health Concern, emphasized that the nonprofit would have conducted the relocations in phases, over the course of days or weeks, to minimize the turmoil for those already facing life's vicissitudes.
García's criticism did not end with the action itself but extended to the circumstances surrounding it. "It is appalling and truly unacceptable to treat some of our community’s most vulnerable in this manner," he remarked. Furthermore, he expressed incredulity at the city's capability to secure housing so rapidly stating, "I find it difficult to believe that the City of Miami was able to find 53 rooms in less than 24 hours." This hasty arrangement raises questions about the transparency and decision-making processes between involved parties, according to Miami-Dade County.
Amidst the turbulence, García has called upon Mayor Levine Cava to conduct a thorough investigation. The aim is to unravel the details behind the impetuous decision to move these individuals under such pressing circumstances and without the requisite support.
