A violent scene unfolded on Thanksgiving Day in Pasco County, Florida. A man was allegedly swinging a sword near children on the holiday, causing distress in the neighborhood before being shot by deputies. According to WFLA, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco reported that the man, yet to be identified, had been creating fears among locals yesterday, sending threatening messages and brandishing a sword publicly.
Officials arrived at his Boland Avenue residence in Shady Hills after 7:30 PM to conduct a welfare check, prompted by the alarming activities. It quickly became a critical situation when the subject emerged from his home with a firearm. Despite commands by deputies to disarm, he failed to comply, which tragically led them to shoot to even temporarily prevent further escalation. WFLA cites Sheriff Nocco expressing his desire for the day to have gone differently: "Everybody just wants to have a peaceful day," he said following the incident.
After being shot, the man was urgently taken to a hospital, sustaining injuries non-fatal in nature. Revealed by law enforcement, he had been under the influence, with a blood alcohol content of .307, nearly four times over the legal limit for driving. The Sheriff's Office announced that aside from alcohol, additional tests would clarify whether other substances played a part in the man's behavior. There was no further threat posed to the public, as reported by ABC Action News.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure in such incidents. The deputy involved has settled into being placed on paid administrative leave during this process.
