A Portland man, identified as Michael J. English, 33, is currently facing manslaughter charges following a morning shooting in the Hazelwood Neighborhood. According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), English was being treated for injuries related to the incident at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital when he managed to escape police custody.
An intense search ensued not long after English slipped away from the hospital at around 9:45 a.m. under the guise of changing clothes. Utilizing a combination of air support, drones, and K9 units, the PPB, alongside the partnership with VA Hospital Police and OHSU Police, managed to bring the suspect into custody before 11:00 a.m. Having taken advantage of the situation to make an ill-fated attempt at freedom, the VA Police were the ones who ultimately located and arrested him.
Upon his recapture, English was interviewed by homicide detectives. Afterward, he was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Manslaughter in the First Degree and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. This arrest marks yet another chapter in the unfolding saga of a city grappling with the consequences of violence and the often arduous pursuit of justice in its wake.
Details about the shooting's circumstances and English's history remain under investigation. As the Hazelwood community reckons with the unrest, the PPB continues to probe into the incident that led to English's initial hospitalization and subsequent flee attempt.
