A recent incident in San Diego's Black Mountain Ranch neighborhood took a tragic turn as a local cyclist was struck and killed by a motorist. The cyclist, later identified as 60-year-old San Diego resident James Michael Osmus, was pronounced dead at the scene following a collision in the bike lane of Camino Del Sur last Friday evening, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
The San Diego Police Department reported, in a puzzling circumstance, that a 50-year-old female driving a 2015 Volkswagen EOS, for unknown reasons, veered into the bicycle lane where Osmus was riding. The accident occurred near the intersection with Casey Glen around 6:49 PM. Officer J. Perales, the Watch Commander, shared in a statement that alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor, leaving the cause of the accident still undetermined.
The driver of the Volkswagen stopped immediately after the accident and made attempts to administer lifesaving measures to Osmus. Despite these efforts, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department declared Osmus unresponsive upon their arrival and noted trauma as the cause of death, Hoodline reports.
Authorities are currently investigating this tragic collision and have called on the community for assistance. "Anyone with information related to the above incident(s) is encouraged to call the listed Command handling the investigation or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477," stated the San Diego Police Department via Hoodline News. This appeal to the public seeks to clarify the events leading up to Osmus's death and hopefully prevent future incidents of this nature from occurring in the area.
