Following a series of grave sex abuse allegations involving school employees, the St. Helens School Board has appointed Dr. Steve Webb as the interim superintendent, on a unanimous vote. Amid cries for transparency and reeling from a lack of leadership, the interim position, announced yesterday, will have Dr. Webb steer the embattled school district for the upcoming 90 days, as reported by KOIN.
With the community shaken by the arrest of a high school choir director and a recently retired math teacher on second-degree sexual abuse charges, and looming investigations into district leaders for failing to report allegations of abuse, the sense of urgency is palpable. Parents and community members' faith in the system has been greatly disturbed, affecting several students over years, according to information from an OPB report. The school board had recently placed both Superintendent Scot Stockwell and high school principal Katy Wager on paid administrative leave in the wake of these allegations.
In a statement obtained by KOIN, Dr. Webb will “focus on stabilizing district and school leadership, listening to stakeholders, and recommending actions that are needed to address the district’s current crisis and long-term needs.” These actions are seen as necessary to forge a path toward recovery and reestablish safe, respectful, and ethical learning environments in the St. Helens School District. Trinity Monahan, the acting chairperson for the St. Helens School Board, emphasized the importance of addressing the broken trust between the community and the school district. “We know that it will take concerted effort and significant time to address the trust that has been broken between our community and school district,” Monahan told KOIN.
Details of Dr. Webb's 90-day contract, including his compensation, remain undisclosed as disclosed by board members and district staff. Dr. Webb's previous term as superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools ended in a substantial retirement agreement in 2021, as per the same OPB article.
