The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is hitting the streets with a new fleet of vehicles, and they're going directly to the homes of some of their officers. As reported by the department's official news release, SLMPD has launched the Personally Assigned Marked Patrol Vehicle Program as of October 7, providing 28 take-home cars to commissioned officers who meet specific criteria. This initiative is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement signed back in March of 2023.
Officers who, after having completed at least 5 years of service and who find themselves in good standing, will be considered for a personally assigned patrol car. Nonetheless, the program prioritizes those in uniformed patrol assignments, like district patrol, and insists that beneficiaries must reside within the City of St. Louis. The allocation of the cars will be managed on a seniority basis, extending to ranks of Police Officer and Sergeant—along with any personnel handpicked by the Police Commissioner themselves.
These vehicles are designated for professional duties including, but not limited to, patrol operations, and commutes to and from approved job-related training, educational programs, or fitness activities. They are, however, strictly barred from non-work-related use under the watchful guidelines delineated in the City of St. Louis Vehicle Policy Manual.
