The Bay Area is dealing with a major storm that disrupted San Francisco International Airport during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. According to a report by NBC Bay Area, the adverse weather has resulted in over 60 cancellations and more than 430 delays on Wednesday alone. With the storm projected to persist, the travel plans of those looking forward to Thanksgiving celebrations are being tested.
As the rainstorm marched this morning, travelers at San Francisco International Airport were experiencing more than 100 delays and dozens of cancellations, said KTVU. Bucky Dingler, with nowhere to stay over at the airport, sleep was forced upon him as he searched unsuccessfully for a hotel room. "They just kept delaying the flight," he told KTVU.
Despite a lower number of delays reported early this morning at nearby Oakland and San Jose airports, there remains a potential for the situation to escalate as the storm is forecast to intensify between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. today. Trying to escape the chaos, Mykayla Williamson, a Stanford student, expressed her concern to KTVU about making it home for a cousin's wedding over the weekend. "I was concerned about travel delays," she said. "I’ve seen storms hitting the Washington area around Seattle area. I’ve been concerned about this Thanksgiving holiday and making it home."
Amid these cancellations and disruptions, aviation expert Mike McCaron iterated the need for travelers to stay informed. "If we can't get out of this weather, which it doesn't look like we're going to until sometime next week, all these people could be delayed and probably will be delayed to their destination," McCaron stressed, as per NBC Bay Area.
