A tragic event unfolded in Florida City where an 18-year-old, Kendy Javier Torres Figueras, has been arrested and is facing second-degree murder charges after the fatal shooting of a man, Miami-Dade police announced. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Palm Drive and U.S. 1, and the victim, yet unnamed, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest, as described in a report from Local 10 News.
The incident reportedly began with a family-related dispute. Witnesses have identified Torres Figueras as a relative who confronted the man, leading to the shooting. "Moments later, police said Torres Figueras pulled up to the scene in a Toyota Corolla and confronted the passenger inside the red pickup," according to Sgt. David Hunsberger's statement was obtained by Local 10 News.
The victim was then told to quickly get out and told Torres Figueras to "stop threatening me" before shots were fired. It was reported by NBC Miami that Torres Figueras surrendered to Florida City police and was taken into custody thereafter.
The arrest report detailed that the confrontation and shooting were captured on surveillance video, which assisted in the identification of Torres Figueras. Despite the swift response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, who airlifted the victim to Jackson South Medical Center, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The story of the fatal encounter was also covered by Hoodline, mentioning that the westbound lanes of Palm Drive were closed as investigators examined the site of the crime.
Investigations into the motive behind this violent act are ongoing. Torres Figueras waived his rights and admitted to the shooting during questioning, police confirmed. He remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center awaiting his bond to be set. Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
