A longstanding cold case clouding Uintah County has finally witnessed a break as prosecutors charge a Tooele man with the 1974 murder of an army veteran. Darrel Eugene Choate, 74, now faces first-degree felony murder charges in the death of 21-year-old Gregory Dahl Nickell, based on new court documents released on Nov. 1. According to ABC4, this development comes over five decades since the crime was committed.
Previously identified suspect, Daniel Arthur Bell named in the case by the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office in 2022, was confirmed deceased and his remains cremated in 2019. Court documents highlighted by KSL revealed that further DNA testing has pinned Choate as a direct match for one of the killers, moving the investigation toward a grim closure. Having an extensive criminal background that included sexual offenses, Choate also offered claims as outlandish as his belief in his ability to read minds.
The crucial lead in this case materialized when law enforcement, responding to an unrelated call at Choate's residence, secured a DNA sample linking him to the decades-old crime. A probable cause statement, as indicated by FOX13, asserted Choate's DNA as corresponding with one of Nickell's murderers. This breakthrough prompted a poignant response from the victim’s sibling, who, per an interview with FOX13, divulged a 52-year-old vow to never cease seeking justice for her brother.
Albeit Choate is currently not in custody, the gravity of the case and the longevity of the search for answers cast a weighty expectation on the legal proceedings to follow. "I just want to be able to look him in the face and ask him why," Nickell's sister Ray expressed, as obtained by FOX13, encapsulating a sentiment shared by many touched by tragedies left unresolved for lifetimes.
