San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood became the site of a deadly shootout last Wednesday that left two citizens and the gunman dead and a Harbor Police officer injured. According to official the City of San Diego government reports, Rachael Martinez, 31, and Jose Medina, 39, were fatally shot in their vehicle outside the San Diego County Courthouse. Shortly after, law enforcement officers engaged 26-year-old Christopher Farrell, the assumed suspect, in a gunfight in Little Italy.
In the ensuing chaos, Harbor Police Officer Patrick Lynch was shot in the hip but is reportedly awake, alert, and in good spirits following surgery, Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez said in an interview recorded by FOX 5/KUSI. Farrell was shot multiple times and later died of his wounds. Corporal Jason Day and Officer Alexander Kahn, both field training officers of the Harbor Police, were identified as the officers who discharged their weapons during the shootout. To investigate the officer-involved shooting further, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, along with other federal agencies, will thoroughly review the circumstances.
The backdrop to this tragic incident involved a previous relationship between Martinez and Farrell. Martinez had filed a domestic violence report against Farrell, and a temporary restraining order had been obtained, as per the Hoodline article. The court hearing related to this matter was scheduled for the day of the shooting.
SDPD Chief Scott Wahl acknowledged the emotional toll of the day, stating, "This morning at this scene we’re filled with a lot of emotion — empathy," according to a Hoodline briefing. Chief Wahl praised the officers' actions, believing they "saved lives." The drama left witnesses shaken, with employees from the local eatery, the Crack Shack, reporting to have quickly taken cover during the shootout. "It was a scary moment, to be honest, we were just like laying on the ground and that’s all for like 40 or 30 minutes," one witness recounted the terrifying ordeal.
