A Venice man has succumbed to injuries sustained in an ATV crash that occurred on October 23 in Plaquemines Parish, as confirmed by Louisiana State Police. Alec Pelas, 22, was operating a 2002 Honda TRX 350 ATV heading south on LA 23 near Tidewater Road when the vehicle unexpectedly crossed the median and collided with a northbound 2016 GMC Sierra, according to WGNO.
Pelas, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, suffered serious injuries. He was promptly transported to a local hospital, where, he remained in critical condition until his death on Sunday. The driver of the GMC did not sustain injuries during the incident. As part of their investigation, state troopers collected routine toxicology samples for analysis, the results of which are pending, Louisiana State Police Troop B reported.
The use of ATVs on roadways is not permitted under Louisiana law, barring certain exceptions related to farming and other specified duties. State authorities remind the public of the importance of wearing proper safety equipment such as DOT-approved helmets while operating ATVs, in efforts to reduce the risk of injury or death, as mentioned by state troopers in a statement obtained by Louisiana State Police Troop B.
The investigation into the crash that led to Pelas's death continues, with officials examining the cause behind the ATV's movement into opposing traffic. While the toxicology reports are part of the standard procedure, they often provide critical insight into such unfortunate events, potentially informing future safety campaigns and legal considerations, WDSU reports.
