El Paso's roads witnessed the grim tally of another life claimed in a vehicular incident, as the city's 63rd fatal crash of the year was reported on November 22nd. According to the City of El Paso, the Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to the 5300 block of N. Mesa to investigate a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 5:29 p.m. The pedestrian, not utilizing a crosswalk at the time, was struck by a northwest-bound vehicle operated by an individual identified as Cardoza.
Cardoza, who stayed at the scene and reported no injuries, was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian, who decided to quickly cross N. Mesa. Following the incident, the pedestrian was rapidly transported to a local hospital for treatment. However, the situation took a tragic turn when, on November 30th, the Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the pedestrian, Mr. Ray, had died resulting from his injuries sustained in the crash.
The unfortunate incident highlights a persistent problem in urban settings, pedestrian safety, and the critical role of crosswalks. The data release further illustrates the stark reality that such incidents contribute significantly to traffic fatalities in the city. This latest fatality brings 2024's count to 63, slightly lower than the 75 recorded at this time last year. These numbers serve not only as a cold statistic but more soberly as a reminder of the lives irrevocably altered by moments of inattention and the fragility of life on our busy streets.
