The Bay Area is bracing for a concoction of weather hazards, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco, with sneaker waves and dense fog warnings already in effect. According to the NWS San Francisco, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued from 6 pm Wednesday to 6 pm Thursday for the coast from Sonoma County to Monterey County, warning beachgoers of sneaker waves that could break as high as 10 to 13 feet. In addition to the sneaker wave risk, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in place until 9 AM Wednesday for various Bay Area regions, with hazardous driving conditions anticipated due to visibilities quarter mile or less.

While the fog is expected to clear by late morning today, the region should enjoy relatively milder conditions with sunny skies and above-average temperatures. However, the reprieve is short-lived, as the onset of “widespread heavy rain and high wind is likely across the Bay Area and Central Coast this weekend and early next week,” the NWS San Francisco cautions. To add to the complexity, when visibility down to a 1/4mi persisted, dense fog was not as widespread as last night across the Santa Clara Valley and through the East Bay into the North Bay.

Maritime conditions are also set to become treacherous. The NWS has predicted the approach of a low-pressure system by Friday, intensifying into the weekend with strong winds coupled with elevated wave heights between 15 to 19 feet, potentially impacting small crafts. "Another low pressure system arrives Friday into the weekend bringing light to moderate rain, fresh to strong winds, and elevated wave heights," as per the National Weather Service, suggesting mariners should exercise caution or avoid going to sea during this time.

Looking ahead, as another system approaches the West Coast, a second period of dangerous, elevated surf near 15 feet will hit Saturday into Sunday. As per the National Weather Service, they have forecasted that on Monday into Tuesday next week, "a very large and powerful, long period west swell train will likely arrive along our entire coastline." This could translate to even more significant impacts, with swell heights potentially exceeding 20 feet, making vigilance of coastal residents and authorities crucial. The public is urged to stay updated as further developments ensue.
