A tragic turn of events unfolded on the morning of Friday in Salem, where Canby resident Brett Dhone, age 37, was involved in a car crash on Martin Luther King Jr Parkway and later succumbed to his injuries. According to the Salem Police Department, the crash was reported around 7:30 a.m., and it is believed that Dhone experienced a "medical event" prior to the accident as per KOIN report.
The incident resulted in Dhone's truck striking a tree before reentering the roadway and rolling to a stop. Bystanders acted quickly to provide medical aid until paramedics arrived to take over. Despite efforts to save him, Dhone was taken to Salem Health hospital where he was pronounced dead, a narrative confirmed by the Statesman Journal.
The sad occurrence marks the 20th fatal collision in Salem for the year 2024, tallying up to 21 deaths related to vehicular incidents. According to KPTV, the preliminary investigation suggests the medical episode as the primary factor leading to the crash. Yet, as is often the case in such incidents, further details may emerge as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the community has been left to grapple with the sudden loss. The impact of Dhone's passing extends beyond the cold statistics of traffic fatalities, touching the lives of those who knew him and those who came to quickly assist in an attempt to alter an apparently sealed fate. Further information regarding the nature of Dhone's medical event or any other contributing factors to the crash has yet to be disclosed.
