Firefighters in Chicago faced a challenging battle with an extra-alarm blaze that broke out on a Saturday evening at a warehouse facility in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The fire ignited in a truck and trailer repair business known as Quality Truck & Trailer, located in the 4100 block of South Oakley Avenue. When the Chicago Fire Department arrived, they raised the alarm to a 3-11 level, a classification which brought at least 12 fire engines, four fire trucks, two tower ladders, and around 125 firefighters to the scene, as reported by CBS Chicago.
The fire's beginnings were marked by an ominous sign, neighbors recounted explosions before the firefighters' arrival. "Right when I walked to my front door, I started seeing flames. After that, I started hearing explosions. So I called the police department, they directed me to the fire department, got them here, knocked on my mom's door, and after that explosion after explosion after explosion," William Rodriguez, a resident, told CBS Chicago. The structural integrity of the warehouse was compromised as the roof collapsed and firefighters initially struggled with water pressure issues.
Despite this, NBC Chicago reports that the Chicago Water Department was summoned to alleviate the water pressure dilemma, while Peoples Gas promptly discontinued service to the building to mitigate further risks. The heroic efforts of the fire team were apparent as the blaze, visible from as far as the Willis Tower over six miles away, was brought under control and struck out by 8:21 p.m.
Assistant Deputy Fire Commander Donald Walker voiced the challenges faced during the firefighting endeavor, telling CBS Chicago, "It really was the weather that we were battling, and the point that we didn't have enough water pressure for us to feed our master streams." Despite the hazardous conditions and the intense demand for resources, the incident did not lead to any injuries. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and authorities have not released details on the extent of the damage to the warehouse and the vehicles contained within.
