The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert warning residents of the 25th District of a recent spree of burglaries, vehicular hijackings, and motor vehicle thefts. According to the alert, the perpetrator has been gaining access to homes through unlocked doors and open windows. When encountering resistance, the suspect allegedly implies possession of a handgun to intimidate victims and demand property.

In the series of crimes reported, incidents were recorded at various locations across Belmont Gardens and Hermosa last Thursday. Among these incidents, a parked and unoccupied auto was entered by the offender, found with the keys inside and the engine running, after leaving the owner of their vehicle. Chicago police have described the offender as a male, estimated to be between 5'8" and 6'3" in height and 120-140 lbs, last seen clad in a dark blue ski mask, blue hooded sweatshirt, and gray sweatpants.

Community members are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately. In cases of confrontation, the Chicago Police Department advises residents to try to stay calm and note any distinctive features of the assailant, such as scars or a limp. "If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives," the Chicago Police Department instructed in its alert.

Citizens are also encouraged to not engage with the assailant but rather focus on gathering information like unique physical characteristics, which can be critical for police investigations. If approached by a witness, victims should request their contact information. "Immediately dial 9-1-1 and remain on the scene when possible," the alert recommends, ensuring witnesses and victims offer the best possible assistance to law enforcement.
