The Chicago Police Department is turning up the heat on impaired driving this weekend in the 15th (Austin) District. From Saturday to the early hours of Sunday, officers will scour the streets in a concentrated effort to curtail DUI incidents – an initiative known as DUI Saturation Patrol. For those planning on a night out in Austin, expect an increase in police presence and traffic enforcement from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

In pursuit of keeping the roads safe, these patrols are keeping an eye out for an assortment of infractions from seat belt neglect to speeding. Speed detection-equipped vehicles will be out in force, highlighting the CPD's commitment to slow down the fast and the reckless, ensuring that traffic laws are respected. Additionally, the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit is also on standby – a tool designed to streamline the charging process for DUI offenses on the spot.

Impressive as the BAT Mobile Unit sounds, it serves another function – processing I-Bonds, or Individual Recognizance Bonds, right there at the site. This means that in some cases, those nabbed for DUIs might avoid an immediate trip to the lockup, as explained in an announcement from the Chicago Police Department.

Last December 13-14, 2024, officers issued a total of 20 citations: five for unsafe vehicles, three for insurance violations, three for seat belt oversights, and four for speeding, among a few others. No drunk driving charges, no vehicles towed, and no other arrests – perhaps a sign that drivers are getting the message, or maybe just a quiet night.

The CPD is keeping a watchful eye on Chicago's streets, with the Austin district now under the microscope. For those driving in the area this weekend, consider double-checking seatbelts, moderating speed, and, crucially, thinking twice before drinking and driving.
