Tension gripped Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood late Tuesday afternoon when police responded to a potential threat at a popular local eatery. As reported by WGN-TV, authorities issued an "all clear" following the discovery of a suspicious object, later identified as a hand grenade, inside a bag at Original Jimmy's Red Hots, located at the corner of Grand Avenue and Pulaski Road.
While the presence of such a device might usually stir immediate panic, the response teams worked to methodically secure the area, effectively evacuating nearby civilians and assessing the situation. The Chicago Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene to investigate the object, which CBS Chicago described as having been found inside a bag. The intersection was temporarily blocked off to traffic and pedestrians alike.
Officers declined to provide specifics on the nature of the suspicious object at the time of discovery. However, the bomb unit's arrival and subsequent investigation led to the confirmation that the object of concern did indeed resemble a hand grenade. According to the same report by CBS Chicago, the device would be treated as live until it could definitively be classified otherwise.
The incident inevitably caused some temporary but significant disruption in one of the West Side's most trafficked areas. Nevertheless, an "all clear" was given at around 5:45 p.m., according to CBS Chicago, indicating no immediate danger to the public. The emergency units took care to first ensure the site was safe before lifting roadblocks and allowing the city's pulse to continue its usual rhythm.
Officials stated there were no injuries resulting from the incident, and the package was removed safely by the Bomb Squad. According to WGN-TV, following the clearance, the scene was deemed "secured and clear," and the area has been reopened to the public. The investigation into the origins of the hand grenade and the motive behind its placement continues.
