The Chicago Police Department is launching a DUI Saturation Patrol in the Rogers Park area this weekend, targeting impaired drivers and various traffic violations. The patrol is scheduled to run from Friday, December 6, 2024, at 6 p.m. until the early hours of Saturday at 2 a.m., the department announced.

Officers in the 24th District will focus on signs of impaired driving, but will also be on the lookout for speed violations and seatbelt occupancy, according to the department’s statement, along with the routine patrol cars, speed detection vehicles will be situated throughout the area to catch speeding drivers, which may lead to further scrutiny.

The police department has also noted that their Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit may be utilized to facilitate faster processing of DUI charges. This unit's presence allows officers to issue Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) at the scene, rather than transporting individuals to a lockup facility for bonding.

Statistics from a recent DUI Saturation Patrol in the 5th (Calumet) District show that a total of 80 citations were issued, including 14 for unsafe vehicle violations and 18 for insurance violations. Despite the heavy presence of police, there were no arrests for DUI, and no vehicles were towed. Other infractions ranged from seatbelt violations to one instance of distracted driving due to cellphone use, according to the numbers released by the department.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Chicago Police to curb impaired driving and promote traffic safety throughout the city. For those traveling in and around the Rogers Park district this weekend, expect an increased visibility of law enforcement and perhaps take the time to ensure all aspects of your vehicle and driving habits are within legal bounds.
