A driver died Friday after a blue sedan lost control heading south on Arlington Heights Road, crossed every northbound lane, struck a utility pole and a fence, and flipped over in the median just south of Biesterfield Road. Police reported no other injuries from the crash, which shut down one of Elk Grove Village's busiest arterial roads for hours.
Sedan Overturned Near Church and Cinema
The crash happened on the stretch of Arlington Heights Road just south of Christus Victor Lutheran Church and the Elk Grove Cinemas, according to Journal & Topics. Police said the vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes before striking a utility pole and a white fence, then overturned in the median. Photos from the scene, credited to Robert Wessell, show the damaged fence and the wrecked sedan under a tent that crews erected over the overturned vehicle.
The Elk Grove Village Police Department later confirmed the same basic sequence in a public update, describing a single southbound blue sedan that lost control and crossed all northbound lanes before hitting the pole and fence and rolling in the median. Police operated a drone over the scene to assist with crash reconstruction, and investigators continued examining the wreckage after the vehicle was removed. Officers said they had notified the driver's next of kin, though the driver's identity has not been released.
Power Cut, Road Shut for Hours
ComEd crews responded to the scene after the crash knocked out power to five customers nearby, the village reported. Construction barriers blocked both directions of Arlington Heights Road south of Biesterfield Road while police investigated and utility crews repaired the downed lines and damaged fencing. The road was expected to remain closed for several hours, and Elk Grove Village Police confirmed both directions fully reopened by 3:30 p.m. Friday after a 4.5-hour closure.
Dispatching for the crash response ran through the Northwest Central Dispatch System, the intergovernmental 911 agency that coordinates police and fire calls for 13 northwest Chicago suburbs and more than 500,000 residents. Under Cook County Ordinance No. 15-5145, local police are required to immediately report any fatal traffic crash to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, which investigates more than 5,600 unnatural or sudden deaths across the county each year. It remains unknown whether medical distress played any role in the driver losing control, and finalized autopsy and toxicology findings from the medical examiner have not been released.
A Corridor With a Deadly History
This is not the first fatal crash on this short stretch of Arlington Heights Road. In August 2025, a speeding SUV struck a turning sedan on the 800 block just north of Biesterfield Road, killing 59-year-old Elk Grove Village resident Maria de Lourdes de Jimenez; police later charged the SUV driver, who was allegedly going more than 35 mph over the posted limit, according to Patch. In August 2019, an 84-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck while crossing the road midblock between Biesterfield Road and Brandywine Avenue, directly in front of Christus Victor Lutheran Church, as Journal & Topics reported at the time.
The village lowered the speed limit on Arlington Heights Road from 40 mph to 35 mph years ago, a change that municipal engineering records show cut traffic collisions along the corridor by nearly half. Statewide, fixed-object crashes — hitting things like utility poles or fences — are the single most common cause of fatal traffic collisions, according to Illinois Department of Transportation data cited by Levin & Perconti, with Cook County logging more than 160,000 crashes a year. Fewer than 1% of Illinois's nearly 300,000 annual crashes prove fatal.
Elk Grove Village has seen other complex single-vehicle crash investigations in the area recently. In April, police recovered the body of a 26-year-old man from a retention pond near Higgins and Arlington Heights roads a month after he fled a rollover crash nearby, a case Hoodline previously covered. Separately, a similar crash that April critically injured a Buffalo Grove High School staffer when a car struck a utility pole in a neighboring suburb, cutting power and shutting roads for an extended stretch.
It is also unclear whether ComEd will need to replace the utility pole sheared in Friday's crash. Meanwhile, ongoing Illinois Tollway construction at the nearby I-90 interchange, which began in March with lane reductions and toll plaza work expected to run through late 2026, continues to affect traffic patterns in the broader Arlington Heights Road corridor.
