In an unsettling incident early yesterday morning, California Highway Patrol officers were fired upon while pursuing a suspect vehicle in Hayward, leading into Oakland. According to a social media post by CHP Hayward, the chase began when a gray 2020 Honda Civic committed a speeding violation on northbound I-880, north of "A" Street, and refused to pull over.
The subsequent pursuit escalated as it veered off the freeway onto Oakland's city streets, where the passenger of the Honda reportedly discharged a firearm toward officers on three distinct occasions, prompting a dangerous situation not just for the officers involved but also for unsuspecting members of the public who might have been in the vicinity. The officers eventually fell back from the relentless pursuit, which resulted in the suspects evading capture. They found the Civic abandoned later within the City of Oakland.
Authorities from the CHP Hayward Area office are reaching out to the community in hopes that witnesses will step forward. Individuals with any information related to this incident are encouraged to come forward and contact the CHP Hayward Area office at (510) 489-1500.
