On Christmas Day, a tragic accident occurred on a Dania Beach roadway, resulting in the death of 60-year-old James Small, a local electric scooter rider. He succumbed to his injuries after a collision with a car three days earlier, as reported by the Sun Sentinel.
On Sunday afternoon, just before 4 p.m., a 2024 Hyundai Tucson driven by 39-year-old Gregory Ornstein-Bowers was traveling westbound on Sterling Road. At the same time, Small was crossing the road on his electric scooter. The two paths collided when "Ornstein-Bowers told detectives that he didn’t see Small until he was in front of him, causing him to swerve to avoid a crash," but the vehicle hit the left side of the scooter, causing Small to be ejected into the center lane, according to WSVN.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue teams responded quickly and transported Small to Memorial Regional Hospital. Despite their efforts, Small died in the hospital, and authorities confirmed his death on Christmas Day.
The Broward Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident, and charges have not been discussed. Their traffic homicide unit is working to understand the details of the crash.
