On Christmas Eve, tragedy struck in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan when a vehicle, veering wildly out of control, crashed into a house resulting in one casualty and two injuries. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident unfolded before 7:30 p.m. in the 21300 block of West Engle Drive. Witnesses told authorities the vehicle was seen swerving across lanes before it left the road, plowed into a yard, and slammed into the home, which, fortunately, was unoccupied at the time.

Marcos Corona-Vargas, a 31-year-old resident of Round Lake Beach, was identified as the driver. According to the sheriff's office, he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and, subsequently, faced charges including reckless homicide and a DUI. Lake County officials disclosed that after receiving medical care for serious injuries, Corona-Vargas would be handed over to the police and taken to the Lake County Jail, CBS News Chicago reports.

The crash claimed the life of a 22-year-old male who was seated in the front of the Jeep. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 22-year-old man, who was in the backseat, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The identities of the passengers have not been released to the public.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is continuing investigations into the crash, and their Technical Crash Investigations Team is thoroughly examining the details of the incident.
