An early morning tragedy unfolded on Australian Ave. this past Saturday when a 65-year-old man pushing a wheelchair was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer. According to the CBS12, the incident was reported to the West Palm Beach Police Department right before the crack of dawn, at approximately 4:53 a.m.
The collision took place at the intersection of Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. and Australian Ave. The man was crossing the road, when he was hit by the northbound tractor-trailer. The West Palm Beach Police Department notes that a 2022 Kenworth, operated by a woman from Palm Beach Gardens, had the green light during the moment of the impact. The identity of the man has been withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
Though paramedics responded swiftly, rushing the critically injured pedestrian to the hospital, the man's injuries proved too severe. He passed away shortly after 8 a.m. that morning, The Palm Beach Post reported. As for the tractor-trailer driver, the police have stated that no charges are pending, although the case stays open. The Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.
