After 35 years of pulling pints and serving the Beverly neighborhood, McNally's bar is shuttering its doors. The family-owned establishment, located at 11136 S. Western Ave., has been a staple in the community since 1989, and it has announced its permanent closure with a message of gratitude to its loyal patrons. "McNallys has been in our family for 35 years. More importantly, you, who make up this amazing neighborhood have been a part of our lives for 35 years. Thanking you for your support cannot be put into words. Truly you made McNallys The Best Bar on Western," said a spokesperson for the bar in a Facebook post obtained by WGN-TV.
Known affectionately to locals as 'The Best Bar on Western', McNally's has been a warm, inviting venue where community members could gather for both celebrations and commiserations. A nod was given to the nearby St. Catejan Parish and Mrs. Coakley, who educated many of the neighborhood's children, including the bar's owners. "McNally's was never about being a business. It was about having a place to gather, to share our best moments and unfortunately sometimes our worst," the establishment shared in a statement reported by CBS News Chicago.
McNally's has also been noted for its iconic marquee sign, often displaying messages with a cheeky jab at Cubs fans in a predominantly White Sox territory. Memorable messages like "Go Sox & whoever plays the Cubs," and support for the Cleveland team during the 2016 World Series were part of the bar's charm, as per CBS News Chicago. The playful rivalry extended to the point where a satirical sports website once attempted to crowdfund the purchase, and teardown, of the so-called "troll bar," as it was affectionately labeled in jest.
While the specific date for the last orders at McNally's has not yet been disclosed, the business appears as "permanently closed" on Google as of Wednesday night. CBS News Chicago has reached out for more details but has not received a response.
