Tragedy struck the Metra's Union Pacific West line on Sunday afternoon as a person was fatally hit by a train near the Oak Park station. Metra officials confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that the incident occurred around 3 p.m., causing service disruptions and "extensive delays."
The identity of the person struck has not been released, and the circumstances surrounding the collision are under investigation. Following the incident, both inbound and outbound train services were suspended as emergency services tended to the scene. According to CBS News Chicago, the Chicago Transit Authority indicated that Green Line trains, which share the same tracks, also faced significant delays.
Oak Park police, in an interview with CBS News Chicago, stated it appeared the incident was a suicide. This revelation adds a somber layer to an already distressing event, shedding light on the human element often lost amidst the mechanical and logistical response to such tragedies. Services resumed by about 4:30 p.m. with some remaining delays, and by early evening, regular scheduling began to normalize.
