Chaos briefly disrupted the workings of governance in the heart of Chicago Wednesday as a fire broke out at City Hall, leading to an evacuation. As per details shared by WGN-TV, the blaze was reported around 11 a.m. on the building's third floor, located at 118 North Clark Street. It began in a records storage area but was swiftly contained by the city's fire department.
The fire's timing was such that it coincided with a Chicago City Council meeting. The alarm was set off and everyone, including alderpeople, was instructed to leave the premises. "Electrical fire in the building. Time to evacuate!" Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) posted on social media. The emergency led to Randolph Street's closure where several fire trucks were observed encircling the historic building.

Two individuals received medical examinations on the scene, and reports mention no significant structural damage occurred because of the blaze. According to the Chicago Fire Department, as reported by Fox 32 Chicago, the fire was declared struck out by 12:10 p.m. To evacuate the smoke, firefighters employed fans and opened windows.
By roughly 12:30 p.m., normalcy seemed to creep back as personnel were allowed back into City Hall. WGN Reporter Courtney Spinelli shared a glimpse into the evacuation, saying, "Evacuations underway after fire alarm at City Hall. Meeting was sent into recess and everyone ushered out. We can smell smoke. Reports are it’s coming from the county side, though no word on seriousness/what may have happened," according to WGN-TV. Despite the disruption, the quick response from emergency teams helped to prevent a more serious incident.
